Sometimes, the music from 1991 doesn't take off right away. Such was the case with Boy Krazy's "That's What Love Can Do." A Stock Aitken & Waterman production, it was supposed to be kind of Expose for the 90s. But when it originally came out during the summer of 1991, the various media went all rap/grunge/alt-rock on us. "That's What Love Can Do" tanked.During those end-of-year parties in 1992, clubs and DJs rediscovered "That's What Love Can Do." So when we returned to school for the Winter 1993 quarter, radio stations started to play it. Back then, I happened to be a senior at UC Santa Cruz. I had been subjected to four years of alt-rock torture. We were 10-15 minutes early for an Econ class. It was pouring rain outside. My friend/classmate Kim, who was urban, used the classoom's A/V system, to play "That's What Love Can Do." Amazingly, those who were in the classroom, got up, and joyously danced!
So, in early '93, "That's What Love Can Do" become an infectious, well-liked hit, especially among young urban females. 25 years later, those girls are now middle-aged women. Still, every time you play "That's What Love Can Do," the women love it, get up, and dance & sing.
The Audiophiles have long asked me if I brought "That's What Love Can Do" to the March 1993 Stereophile show in San Francisco. The answer is no. I did not then have a copy. So if you heard "That's What Love Can Do" at that show, I was not the one who played it :-)
