New Edition, "Earth Angel"

One of the biggest hits from the summer of 1986 was Peter Cetera's "Glory Of Love," which was from The Karate Kid II. That movie also spawned New Edition's cover of "Earth Angel." Everybody thought that was a new song. But we audiophiles were learned, knowledgeable, and experienced. Back in '86, we knew that the Penguins' "Earth Angel" originally was a major hit from the mid-50s.

So where were you in the summer of '86? Picture yourself going to summer school at Honolulu's prestigious Punahou [Barack Obama's alma mater]. Half of your high school female classmates looked like Tamlyn Tomita. You even went to the theaters with these girls, to see The Karate Kid II, Howard The Duck, and Top Gun. Thus, you just happily and blissfully accepted that one of these way-better-than-ourselves girls was going to be your future wife. And you'd be digging popular music, no matter how old or recent, with her...

...Oh where did we go wrong?

It's now 2016, but we can still listen to and enjoy New Edition's "Earth Angel," and pretend that Washington Saimin [inexpensive and unpretentious enough for us high school kids to go to, after school] still exists.
