Depeche Mode, "But Not Tonight"

During the Fall '86 semester, I had Depeche Mode's Black Celebration on CD. But as I did not have a CD player, I had to go over to the homes of friends who did.

My friend TT lived in San Francisco's Outer Sunset. I dunno; the cool and foggy early evenings fit the dark mood of Black Celebration. Anyway, TT's family had one of those mass market, single-tower rack stereos. Those components were silver-colored, to which they added a black Onkyo CD player. But I could not take my eyes off of what I think were Advent Prodigy II loudspeakers. They looked like the Baby II, but bigger. Whichever Advent that was, the pecan trim sure looked nice.

TT's sister was playing Peter Gabriel's So [on CD!] and Tony Levin's bass on "Red Rain" was excellent.

Then we put in Black Celebration. "A Question Of Lust" was mesmerizing. "Stripped" was its usual excellent self. But it was the CD bonus track, "But Not Tonight," which took home the gold medal.

Radio stations play a lot of Depeche Mode, but they shamefully overlook "But Not Tonight."

Interestingly, "But Not Tonight" appears as a B-side on the "Stripped" single.
