Christina Aguilera, "Genie In A Bottle"

Party like it's 1999! In late summer that year, we began to learn about teen sensation, and former Mickey Mouse Club child, Christina Aguilera. A year earlier, Aguilera had barely scraped the charts, with her version of "Reflection," which appeared on the Mulan Soundtrack. But that was a minor hit. It was really "Genie In A Bottle," which made her explode on the scene.

In summer 1999, I was bowling leagues at San Francisco's late Japantown Bowl. I was looking for partners for the upcoming 1999-2000 Saturday night league. As "Genie In A Bottle" was playing, the short girl, 2B, was strutting along. A-ha! So I asked her, she said yes, and we found one other guy. I think she originally named our trio team, "2B Or Not 2B." But she'd change it every now and then. I liked "2B In Love" the best, but we ended up with "You've Been Watching," because, well, guys did like watching the bouncy, dancing, often peppy 2B.

When the league ended in May 2000, our trio team took first place. If I still have the trophy, it is at my parents' place. Wow, I found the final scoresheet, and did not realize that this was also the time I actually got the high scratch series (747 over three games).

Back then, the audiophiles loved this. You see, we could no longer say we didn't win anything.

Speaking of audiophiles, they also liked the fact that some Apogee Digital equipment and cables were used, during the recording of Christina Aguilera's debut album.

Does "Genie In A Bottle's" rhythm track sound familiar? That's 'cuz one of the co-writers was The System's David Frank. Musically, he wanted "Genie In A Bottle" to be a continuation of "Don't Disturb This Groove," about which I wrote below.

In 2000, I took "Genie In A Bottle" with me to Bay Area audio stores. Sure enough, 90% of the products I auditioned failed. Somewhat surprising, the conservative Mark Levinson system at San Francisco Stereo Plus best captured "Genie In A Bottle." And why did that Mark Levinson system do justice to "Genie In A Bottle?" 'Cuz it maintained image focus, and didn't bloat, blunt, or dull the rhythms. You didn't have to be 2B, in order to punctuate your dance moves.

In Fall 1999, I think 2B was 20 or 21 years old. She remarked that Aguilera, looking really attractive and seductive in the video, was not yet 19. 2B said something like, "Damn, when we were 18, how come we didn't look like that?"

Okay, one of you has my "Genie In A Bottle" CD single. Give it back.
