Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle, "A Whole New World"

"No Lummy," wrote one of my audiophile buddies, "1992 ended with Aladdin!"

Good point, but ehhhhhhhh, not quite. 1992 actually ended with the ear-piercing "I Will Always Love You," by Whitney Houston.

A smart marketing move, Disney liked to release their animated films in the fall, thus capitalizing on the holiday shopping season. That was the case with Aladdin, which came out around Thanksgiving 1992.

The movie featured "A Whole New World," with lyrics by Tim Rice. When Aladdin brought Jasmine onto the magic carpet, they sang "A Whole New World." The movie version was voiced by Brad Kane (then a teenager) and Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon).

During the ending credits, the more well-known commercial version, by Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle, was played. Called "Aladdin's Theme," it was differentiated from the Kane/Salonga version. Yes, a year prior, Bryson had a Disney smash hit with Celine Dion, on "Beauty And The Beast."

During the first week of March 1993, the Bryson/Belle version of "A Whole New World" reached #1. The Stereophile show in San Francisco took place on March 12-14. I may be mistaken, but I could have sworn that, as I once passed by the May Audio room (which featured the Totem Model 1 minimonitor), I heard "A Whole New World." Oh well, if you really, Really, REALLY wanted to hear it, you just could have walked a few blocks to the FAO Schwarz store :-)

So I asked my audiophile buddy what music ended his 1992. He's pretty sure it was some Gene Autry Christmas song. Wow, that is rather different from "A Whole New World." Nevertheless, 23 years later, "A Whole New World" continues to appeal to three generations: children, parents, and grandparents.
