Metallica: ...And Justice For All

By late 1986, Metallica had become well-known amongst us Bay Area high school kids. Even when they weren't on tour, the individual members could be seen roaming around the City. If you went to The Stone, you never knew if James Hetfield or Lars Ulrich would just show up, hang out at the bar, and mingle with the crowds. Some of my classmates swore that they had seen Kirk Hammett skateboarding in the Mission District.

But from our perspective, what really put Metallica on the national map was the summer '88 Monsters Of Rock tour. Kingdom Come, Dokken, Scorpions, and Metallica opened for Van Halen. Unfortunately, when that tour came to Candlestick Park, I was in Honolulu.

Being in San Francisco, my classmates knew that Metallica were working on an album, which would become ...And Justice For All. I think it finally hit record stores at the end of August '88.

Here in San Francisco, we usually got our rock t-shirts from two small stores: Rock Stars on Polk & California, and Broadway Rock on Broadway & Montgomery. Somewhere near the end of Spear Street, at the foot of the Bay Bridge was the Winterland warehouse, but that was in no man's land, and none of us ventured out there. Because of the Pushead designs, Metallica's t-shirts stood out.

I'll never forget December 10, 1988. My friends and I went to Daly City's Cow Palace, where Queensryche did an excellent opening set for Metallica. After a long intermission, finally an announcer walked onstage. He shouted, "Come back tomorrow night, after the Niners kick the Saints' ass!!!"

Indeed, the 49ers would beat the Saints, to squeak into the playoffs. The Niners would go on to win the Super Bowl.

Anyway, that Metallica concert was excellent, memorable, and not as loud as other concerts we had attended at the Cow Palace. Yes, the Lady Liberty statue fell apart. As music historians look back, they note that Metallica were the first thrash metal band to headline arenas.

Over on General Asylum, I've already written about the SHM-CD of ...And Justice For All. I still have, from 1989, two related materials. One is the CD single of "One," which I purchased from Jelly's, then located on Piikoi Street in Honolulu. The other is the "Harvester Of Sorrow" CD single, which I most likely picked up from the Tower Records out at Stonestown.

But enough about my experiences with the ...And Justice For All era. I want to know what you were doing in 88-89, when Metallica's ...And Justice For All ruled the world.
