Shocker OST

We can be forgiven, if we've never heard of the movie, Shocker. Apparently released just in time for Halloween 1989, it starred Mitch Pileggi, who would go to X-Files fame, as Walter Skinner.

If we don't know about the movie Shocker, we won't know about its accompanying soundtrack. However, if you know anything about popular music, you'll know that conventional heavy metal's peak was in 1989. Shocker's soundtrack is primarily the work of Desmond Child* (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Kiss, Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, Aerosmith), who assembled kind of an all-star cast.

But sigh, as is typical for late-80s glam metal, the Shocker soundtrack has a thin, slick, whiny, squawky sound. This is perhaps at its most offensive, on Megadeth's cover of Alice Cooper's "No More Mr. Nice Guy."

If you dig even deeper into hard rock, you may stumble upon the cult favorite, Saraya. When it comes to women of rock, it is inexplicable how New Jersey's Sandi Saraya keeps getting overlooked. But not with me. For 25 years, I've been extolling Saraya, both Sandi and her band. In fact, many of you learned about Saraya, when my Letter To The Editor in the July 1992 Stereophile mentioned them. Furthermore, in the 90s, when we actually went to shows, gatherings, and stores, I frequently brought Saraya's albums. And for the select few who attended my wedding banquet, you heard Saraya's power ballad, "Timeless Love." Where can you get this totally obscure gem? On the Shocker soundtrack.

* Yes, Desmond Child would, in the late-90s, get songwriting credits for Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" and "Livin' la Vida Loca."
