From the liner notes to Chamber Symphony and Grand Pianola Music performed by the London Sinfonietta conducted by John Adams on Nonesuch 7559-79219-2:"Three female voices (the sirens) sing wordless harmony, sometimes floating above the band in long sostenuto triads, while at other times imitating the crisp staccatto of the winds and brass." The liner notes were written by Adams himself so we can assume they're reliable :-)
A higher res system is always nice, but it won't help us to hear what isn't there. I don't know whether I've restored your faith in your system and the others you heard the recording on, or whether I've just wrecked the perfect excuse for an upgrade but look at the bright side - your system is handling the text perfectly as it is.
