For the most part I am less picky about recordings of the Op 18, because that music is accessible to a much wider range of performers. I have the recordings of the Alban Berg, Julliard, Tokyo, Vermeer, Vegh, Italiano, and Guaneri. The Alban Berg is good in the early quartets, even though I dont care for their approach to the late ones. But the Italians are better, although the sound is 60s analogue. The 60s analogue sound of Philips (for the Italians) is better than the 70s sound of the Vegh, which is bass heavy and not as clear. The only movement of the Op 18 quartets, in my opinion, where there is a need for the greatest possible interpreters is the slow movement of No. 1. Here, as in the late quartets, the Vegh Quartet brings a depth of insight that is way beyond the competition. They reveal the mystery of that movement perfectly. Every other perfomance I have heard seems to some extent to miss the mark, by comparison to the Vegh.
