Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

I listened to them last night (more)

I've had the Strings (QT 99.336-8) label release for awhile. A local quartet in San Francisco was doing a Beethoven series and we had tickets for the Op. 130, so I bought the Busch recordings but didn't get a chance to listen much since "prepped" for the live performance with the Italiano on vinyl.

As a result of you post, I listened to the Busch recording of the Op. 130 last evening. I can see why these recording are still in print after 60+ years. Wonderful and very expressive. I'm looking forward to the whole set.

The sound is surprisingly good on my "A" system which has recently been refurbished. The Strings label has used the Cedar Sound System in processing these recordings and, while not the equal to modern technology, has produced to my ears a smooth and musical mono sound. They seem to have removed all the pops and clicks that I assume are on the masters. I couldn't hear much of any background. (System is: Meridian 508.24 CDP, Mark Levinson ML-1 preamp [recently repaired by MLAS], Quad 306 amp, and original Quad ESLs [recently re-built with new treble panels]) The sound is a little harsh on the "B" (maybe actually "D") system comprised of JVC CDP, Sony receiver, and Mission 731 speakers.

You might check Berkshire record outlet for cut out editions of Busch recordings. Anyway, thanks for the interesting posts. I'm going to be spending other evenings in the near future delving into the Busch/Strings CD box.
