The Oppo has both analog audio output, on RCA jacks, which you can patch right into your existing stereo system; or HDMI, which can be patched directly into an A/V receiver. It is when using HDMI that a video monitor may be needed. Some A/V receivers, when using HDMI, will mute if there is no video monitor in the circuit.
My main listening room is this Oppo feeding a Marantz 7.2 A/V receiver via HDMI My speaker configuration is 7.2, with height speakers as the added two to the main 5. Typically with discrete 5.0 material (SACD or Blu-ray Audio) I will use the Marantz's DTS 10 software, which extracts the height information from the 5-channel audio to send to the height speakers. The sound is wonderful, realistic, fabulous -- makes me very happy indeed.
