Barenboim is also mentioned as an upholder of the Furtwangler tradition, and he's pretty dull too! Actually, today's champions of this tradition are kind of a sad bunch. And, on the other side (as if there are only two sides!), Chailly is the great bringer of HIP to the contemporary symphony orchestra? So where does that leave conductors such as Toscanini, Dorati, Reiner, Paray, Solti, and Munch? Oops! The writer has to ignore this whole line of development because it doesn't fit neatly into his little narrative that HIP has restored such qualities as "lean, fast and punchy" to performances. You can only write an article like this one in the NY Times if you're totally unaware of a vast swath of performance tradition (as perhaps some college freshman might be similarly unaware). But of course, the misbegotten idea of the invigorating speeds and accentuation (which we had to wait for HIP practitioners to rediscover) represents the new party line that's taught in the universities these days, so we can't have those unmentioned conductors I named (who had every bit as much - or more! - vigor and accentuation in their own performances) undermining it!
I find it interesting that an article like this one appeared just a year or so before many corporate news outlets have begun to howl (in lock step!) about "fake news" - even though these same outlets are often prime distributors of "fake news" themselves. I'd say that this NY Times article is an example of fake history!
