Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Slightly OT, but I have really come to dislike the 1919 Suite

Stravinsky pared down the size of the orchestra so that it could be played more often, and of course, it was brilliant move, as the piece almost immediately became insanely popular. However, with the wind section cut almost in half, the 1919 Suite loses so much density in the texture I just can't stand it. Also, the individual pieces work so much better in the context of the original ballet. For example, in the original, the Infernal Dance doesn't start like a bolt out of the blue, like it does in the Suite. The 1911 Suite hangs together much better, but nobody plays it, because it uses the original orchestration, and if you're going to hire that many people, you're going to go ahead and play the whole thing. Boulez made a recording of the 1910 Suite with the NY Phil in the 60's, adding the Berceuse and Finale on to it (the 1910 Suite ends with Infernal Dance). The 1945 Suite also makes more musical sense, albeit with the smaller orchestra. It includes more music than the 1919 Suite, plus it has optional connecting passages which enable it to be used by ballet companies as a condensed version of the complete ballet (I believe this is what the Joffrey Ballet uses).

P.S. I also hate playing crap on the B flat clarinet that was originally written for the E flat clarinet.
