It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Ligeti Violin Concerto Lintu/Schmid on Ondine vs Conquer/Pintscher on Alpha

Summary: Go with Schmid/Lintu Ondine, just turn it up.

I first fell in love with this late 20th C masterpiece when the Boulez/Ensemble Intercontemporain was released over a decade (!) ago. The orchestration is fantastic and Ligeti's musical ideas are compelling, to me at least.

After comparing Lintu with Pintscher, I prefer the Lintu in every respect. Surprisingly, today's Ensemble Intercontemporain under Pintscher just doesn't seem completely comfortable with Ligeti's rhythms and accents. I don't sense that they've internalized the music. Both violinist (Conquer) and orchestra are recorded in sound that's a bit grainy and up-close, not very flattering when the poor brass are asked to play in natural harmonics and don't get me started on closely-mic'd ocarinas!

Turning to Lintu/Schmid, I was very pleased with the way the orchestra nails Ligeti's off-beat xlylophone strikes at the beginning. When the orchestra is relaxed, the listener is relaxed. Although the sound needs to be turned way up, (11 o'clock on my amp vs normal 9 o'clock), the more distant mic pickup allows Ligeti's extremely atmospheric and delectable sounds to converse with the hall a bit before hitting the ear. IMHO the violinst Schmid mines much more of the poetry and "soul" from the piece as compared to Conquer, especially during the 2nd mov't. All is not gentle: the more percussive stretches startle and resound, as they should. Ensemble Intercontemporain's drum is a bit flat and dull in comparison.
