It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Setting Up Next Weekend's Download Concert: hi res Rite of Spring, Leaning Towards Litton/BIS

Man they're churning out this warhorse like Toyota churns out monster trucks.

The Litton seems to have received the widest, most enthusiastic acclaim with regard to recording, performance, and bass drum. (Seriously: John Culshaw, author of "Ring Resounding," said he'd always make sure an orchestra had a good, deep and resonant bass drum.)

My favorite Rites have been Stravinsky's own, Boulez/Cleveland and Muti/Philly.

I like my Rites weighty and "unhinged" but not so fast that the rhythmic and melodic textures are flattened.

Rite is the main event, Schreker (courtesy BIS again) will provide the Overture for the evening, and all that's left is a Concerto. Hmmm.

Bartok's 2nd PC with Jean Efflam Bavouzet on Chandos? Great reviews. Love the interplay between piano and bass drum in 3rd mov't. Man, Bartok had an ear and an imagination.

Please, if you think there's better performance/recording choices out there, do tell!
