Did you attend the concert conducted by Kirill Karabits in January 2011? He was guest conducting the SFSO. On the program was Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. I've heard this work countless times live as well as my many commercial and broadcast recordings. I have to say, they played this piece as well as any performance I've ever heard. Energy, lyricism, mystery, tempi and orchestral ensemble spot on, with just enough of an interpretive difference in spots to evoke a few "oh cool" moments. The SFSO sounded really good that night.
They also did a fine job with Silvestrov's Elegy for Strings -- a piece I'm less familiar with, but have heard Karabits do with two different orchestras. Too bad these two pieces were interrupted by Helene Grimaud playing Schumann, but still, it was an excellent concert.
Oddly, Karabits has recorded a bunch of Prokofiev and more modern stuff, but never any music by Rachmaninoff. Based on this one performance of the Symphonic Dances, I'd really like to hear more from him.
