Gala Mariinsky - a superb musical experience on Blu Ray

I've just finished viewing and listening (via headphones) this in my "man cave" and thoroughly enjoyed it - more spine chill moments than experienced for some time.

It is a film of the opening concert for the refurbished Marinsky Theatre May 2 2013 and features a mix of ballet and opera. I was fortunate to attend the old Marinsky some years ago but the seating was pretty basic 4 legged chars with no armrests. Sort of made for "togetherness" with the rest of the audience.It was a performance of The Reingold and I still have not worked out the significance of the staging.

Anyway the new Marinsky has heaps of clever stage facilities which were shown off in this gala performance.The lovely Anna Netrebo might have put on a little weight but the power and beauty of her voice is even greater in the this gala than I remember from her earlier videos.

And there is a performance from Wagner's Die Walkure by the 72 year old Placido Domingo which showed his continued artistry and was followed by a short stint of him conducting.

Most Amazon reviews of this BD agree with me but there are some negatives based on dislike of Putin (which I share) in the audience although it is hard to accept that as a reason for disliking the disc. Another crit is that the audio is only 2 CH stereo, something which did not bother me as listening via headphones it was first class but it might also be an issue for others.

Bottom line from me - highly recommended.
