Well you see, my relationship with our local babe musicians is on a professional (not friendly, not social) basis (even though the professional relationship can eventually become very friendly indeed - I could tell you stories!). I don't call these girls/women "babes" to their faces (even though I don't think anything is wrong with that) for the same reason I don't call the guys I work with "boy-babes" or "hunks". It's just not correct in a professional situation. Another example might be bank tellers, who don't call their customers who walk up to the window "babes" or "hunks" either! ;-)Moreover, as one poster (sorry, I forget who) has already stated, certain terminology is fine when one is writing, while it's more restricted when one is interacting professionally. I'm about to post on a topic which might illustrate this difference.
EDIT: I just deleted that subsequent post, having decided it really serves no useful purpose and just might get people riled up again. ;-)
