Pinchas Zukerman and a new appreciation for classical "superstars"

I believe I'm guilty of unfairness toward the “superstars” of classical music. I may have come to take them for granted while focusing my appreciation on those talents who may be lesser known but who possess extraordinary gifts.

Hearing Pinchas Zukerman with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Jacksonville the other day has given me new appreciation for what I suppose I always have known: There is a reason the superstars became superstars. As both conductor and soloist in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Zukerman was extraordinary.

I was most taken with his playing of the concerto. That he could project phrasing nuances that were at once strikingly original and yet so inevitable sounding was absolutely astounding to me. His expressivity was the kind that is only possible when extraordinary technical skills meet the gift of a great soul. It was among the most transcendently beautiful things I’ve ever experienced. Lesson learned!
