Prefab Sprout: Protest Songs

Apparently, after Prefab Sprout had completed Steve McQueen, they wrote, recorded, and self-produced a bunch of songs, which they then shelved. They would not release this batch, until some time in 1989. They called it Protest Songs.

I did not find out about Protest Songs until late 1989, when I was a freshman at UC Santa Cruz. Since I was at UCSC's Crown College, it was just a short walk on wooden planks, to get to the cabin which housed radio station KZSC. There, I spotted Protest Songs in the cut-out CD wooden bin. I think it was around $4.

I took the Protest Songs CD to my dorm room. I used my Sony D-10 Discman and MDR-CD6 headphones. I could see why, in the mid-80s, Prefab Sprout opted not to release Protest Songs. It wasn't up to the standard set by Steve McQueen. It's mostly mediocre filler. However, it still has some material, which stands the test of time.

Like many Prefab Sprout albums, the first two songs are killer. It is a shame that they did not release, as singles, "The World Awake" and "Life Of Surprises." Perhaps because of Princess Diana's popularity, fans have always liked the slow "Diana." In order to add depth to your music collection, you need rough and buried gems, such as "'Til The Cows Come Home."

Okay, so Prefab Sprout originally shelved Protest Songs. But they, or at least Sony Music Japan, have not refrained from reissuing Protest Songs on Blu-Spec CD2. The original CD does sound like it was made by the band itself. The BSCD2 does not really change that, but does offer firmer, more full bodied, less grainy and hazy sonics. If you really must have Protest Songs, get it on BSCD2.
