Home Jazz Alley

From Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to the new greats of today, this is the place for Jazz!

Saxes and fast licks.....

Ah! Johnny Hodges! One of the all time greats.

My most listened to saxists are Sonny Rollins, Clifford Jordan, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Roland Kirk, Melissa Aldana and Archie Shepp. All very individual players with a strong identifiable styles. None habitually played fast with the exception of Coltrane who certainly played a lot of notes.

My list of "sorry they leave me cold" would include Michael Brecker and Chris Potter who we've discussed before. Just a personal thing, and though my favourite players are true greats, there are plenty of other "great" players who I do rate but don't listen to much like Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson etc etc. Very long list. I've just listed more recent saxists because I don't listen to much jazz before the 1950s, except for stride piano which I really like.

Stride piano is an example of music which is technically difficult but not particularly up tempo. This kind of music can be very rewarding. I'd say that describes Coltrane - lots of notes but not fast tempi as a rule. Keith Jarrett too.
