Yes, I do believe that the interpretive skills those folks brought to their performances had a great timelessness to them. That does'nt mean I do not like modern conductors, I saw Gergiev live recently and raved about his Manfred.The point I was making was that grand manner conveys a 'sentimentality' overlaid on the performances and that is really not true.
