The word "best" is really unsuitable for Beethoven's sonatas span an enormous range of emotive ideas, not all of which a single pianist can express with equal fervour. Here are a few recordings which are IMHO, deeply expressive, evocative, thoughtful and above all moving readings.I have not mentioned sound quality because each of these performances transcend such considerations.
Sonata No. 29, The Hammerklavier, Wilhelm Backhaus KIJC 9216 LP
Sonata No. 23, Appassionata, Sviatoslav Richter RCA LM 2545 LP
Sonata No. 15, Pastoral, Wilhelm Kempff Decca DL 9585 LP
Sonata No. 31, Wilhelm Kempff, Decca DL 9592, LP
Moonlight, The Tempest, Les Adieux, Wilhelm Backhaus, Orfeo d' Or, C 300921B CD
