From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Midori/Brahms/KC S O: a slight return.

Wonderful Midori performance, a blistering first movement, with cadenza truly imparting a violin vs orchestra feeling. One cadenza must have been greatly improvised; I've never heard any recorded or live version that lengthy (no stopwatch...). (The other 15 seemed standard).

Midori brings electric entertainment to the stage: her small figure prowls in tight circles, her feet gliding here-then-there as her facial expressions greatly vary from bliss to anguish. Absolutely recommend attending her performances on this tour.

Note: though the Kaufmann center is beautiful from the shell to the lobby, the interior of the hall isn't. Also, the acoustics are poor, far too bright with a sheen that occasionally was glaring, comparable to listening to one of those poorly engineered early CD recordings. The hall was about 50% empty, perhaps a lot more bodies would have helped, but perhaps not enough.

The first piece by Anna Clyne, "This Midnight Hour," was excellent orchestration and all four of us (and by the applause, the audience) thoroughly enjoyed it.

Note: the placement of some instruments by Michael Stern, the director (son of legendary violinist Isaac, and, like Midori, heavily promoted by Leonard Bernstein) was unusual. Cellos were somewhat scattered to both sides, trumpets were up near the timpani, and the harps were both to the far upper right.
