I agree 100% with everything you've said. While I usually aim to get recordings in the highest resolution possible, I believe that lower-resolution recordings can sound good if done well. (As one who listens to a lot of historical/"pirate" recordings, I'm pretty used to listening to mediocre-to-awful sound quality; it's the performance that counts, after all.) As to how a reduced-resolution recording can sound perceivably better than standard (or even higher) resolution, I think it could be due to a reduction or smoothing-over of any "digital nasties" (like harshness) present in the original recording, making it more pleasant to listen to.
