RE: Celibidache........ [yt]

He was famous for demanding and getting a lot of rehearsal time; that was in his contract with the Munich orchestra. As a NY critic wrote of his first American appearance, "The result was about as revelatory an experience, both thrilling and thought-provoking, as this writer has encountered in 25 years of regular concert-going. First of all, Mr. Celibidache really makes use of all that rehearsal . . . for vivid, almost shocking detail, this concert was unprecedented in my experience . . . [and] detail was only the beginning . . . the kind of close approach to the ideal that Mr. Celibidache strives for simply will not fit into the businesslike routine of today's musical world." And that was with a student orchestra.

For example, listen to his phrasing of the very first melody in the cellos. No one does it quite like that, as beautifully as that. As the rehearsal shows, it did not come easily.

In that day, by the way, his Munich orchestra was considered the number 3 orchestra in Munich. So the quality of the Berlin Phil should be apparent.

Since you seem to be a fan of rehearsal videos you will probably enjoy this one. If you give digitalconcerthall.com your email, once a year they will send you a one week complimentary ticket and you can watch it.
