If I recall, I got my first Collegium Aureum recording on Harmonia Mundi (German) in the late 1970s. I did not (and still don't) consider it "right" or the only way to interpret Baroque and Early music. The timbre and ensemble playing and their infectious sense of rhythm captivated me. From there I got other Harmonia Mundi albums and started seeking out recordings by the musicians on that label. Also found the French Harmonia Mundi recordings and their ensembles.
From there I branched out into Renaissance music and found the EMI Reflexe series that specialized in Medieval and Renaissance music. That led to recordings of David Munrow and his groups.
I also discovered (as in new to me) the L'Oiseau-Lyre for Early and Baroque music. Another label was Telefunken Das Alte Werke. Yet another is the Archiv Produktion series from DGG.
All told, I probably have 2,000 albums (LPs) of original instrument records that I have collected over the past 40 years. Some were given to me (such as the Bach Cantatas and Chamber music on Telefunken) and many were very inexpensive - since apparently the other collectors were not interested. Most of these have been in mint or as new condition and play perfectly.
I find it troubling that this has turned into such a huge debate. From what I have read, these labels and groups started out with the intention to research and present an alternative, not to incite "truth" or "correct".
Also note that I have plenty of recordings of Bach on modern piano. I also play Bach on a modern piano (20th century vintage). Part of the fun of that is figuring out phrasing and pedaling (or mostly lack thereof).
It was also interesting to note on some of the liner notes mention that the replicas of the older instruments were made in the early part of the 1900's. So this interest has been around for a while.
Enjoy the music.
