Crespin's recording of the Verdi Willow song from Otello on the Decca Italian Opera Arias recording is a desert island selection (and disc) for me. Absolute, utterly perfect singing and artistry. Yet strangely, Crespin was not better- known for her singing of Italian opera.
Similarly, Jon Vickers was regarded more highly for Wagner and Britten, and his Italian opera aria LP on RCA is stupendous ( as well as his full recordings of Aida, Otello etc..). His Don Jose with Grace Bumbry singing Carmen on EMI with Fruhbeck de Burgos is magnificent and readily available...
