. . . Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony???
I just downloaded it last night and listened to it this morning. This is a performance in mono from 1959, which was just before the tsunami of Mahler symphony recordings jumped the breakwaters! Wow - talk about FAST! It's an in-concert performance with some places of imperfect ensemble and instrumental lapses. (Too bad about that horn solo at the beginning of the middle movement!) But, in general, the Detroiters play very well, and the whole performance is SO exciting, sometimes with unusual balances which bring some interesting lines out of the texture. And no need to worry that the Adagietto is going to be too slow - not a chance!
I signed up for Symphony Share years ago, and I don't check the group's listings that often, mainly because I'm more interested in performances with more modern engineering. At that time, you had to sign up and be accepted for membership in the group - that was prior to Google Groups taking it over, so I don't know if it's still necessary to sign-up today, if you're interested. During the last few weeks various members have uploaded a lot of broadcast performances from Steinberg and Paray - two conductors who are right up my alley. In any case, this Paray Mahler Fifth, despite its "historical" SQ, was a rock-em, sock-em revelation! ;-)
