I'm pretty amazed how far audiophiles will go to get what a good EQ could do but I recognize that a "good EQ" is a rare thing. When they were super popular (70s - 80s) they were also super cheaply made.I've done away with a lot of the need for an EQ by making my own speakers. Using the very best resistors in the world to adjust the tweeter level is a lot faster, more definite and cheaper than going through the cable/amp/speaker merry go round that entrances so many. I'm done! :)
It makes no sense to buy a $4,000 DAC if you are going to put a cheap EQ with another AD/DA cycle in it, so I am a firm believer in using digital domain EQ when needed.
On my preamp I miss _GOOD_ bass and treble controls. There is no 1 absolute standard, so especially if you listen across genres and time, having basic and well designed tone controls outweigh a lot of negatives. The Parasound TC are usable, but not excellent.
Despite my preferences, I use miniDSP to equalize my subwoofer. It's not in the path to my main speakers though. It is freakishly good.
Most objections I have these days are about the choices made by the user, not the EQ themselves. :)
Best listening,
Erik
