I will be using 'swarm' subs from 150Hz down plus QUAD63s, and will be applying analogue 1/3rd octave Eq'rs.

They were free (3 of them), I've since paid for them to be serviced, and I may get another two.

I am a member of 'Audiophiles on a Budget' the online group. ;-).

Yes, the posters promoting parametric Eq are right, but free is free, and it might just work okay.

Given that swarm subs drive the room so that the need for Eq is diminished I hope to get quite good bass.

And I also expect that having several eq'rs will allow me to eq each bass unit, if needed.

There are to be 3 stages of learning and building, all using four bass sources, approximately in an arc.

Stage 1 with 4 sphere enclosures which should get down to >30 Hz with room-gain.

Stage 2 with two DIY sealed subs using clam-shelled push-pull woofers, boxes built but more to do. Under the QUAD 63s. Using 1/3rd eqrs for extension & smoothness.

Be aware that Eq in the deep bass - for extension below the box frequency (Fb) can quickly chew up amplifier power. The DIY sealed subs using two drivers facing each other in push-pull should both have Fbs below 40Hz. I figure that the biggest one's Fb will be below 30Hz. Strong 20-25 Hz is the aim for Stage 2.

If I need to I can swap the Perreaux 6000C (380 wpc) from the QUADs, and use a Fostex300 (120WPC) for the QUADs. It's unconditionally stable, just like the Perreaux is.

Stage 3? when a pair of big transmission-line (TL) subs replace the last pair of spheres. I hope stage 3 will get us down to 16Hz - to do 64 ft pedal reeds justice.

Further down the track I will be looking at MiniDSP's range, but with a good kit ADC in front of them.

Warmest
