Heard @ Trader Joe's: Survivor, "The Moment Of Truth"

Back in 1984, because the SAs were fixated on "Eye Of The Tiger," they completely missed the boat on Survivor's "The Moment Of Truth." The latter was from that cultural phenomenon, The Karate Kid, another thing the SAs missed out on.

My summer (7th grade) basketball team had practices at Honolulu's Wilson Playground. One of the coaches' daughters was Mina (pronounced "MIN-nuh"). Yes, that's the same Mina who was the most skilled player on our lousy summer football team. The same Mina who was faster and more knowledgeable, than us clunky and un-athletic guys. Similarly, Mina could dribble a basketball better than any of us guys.

See, in basketball, if you had reversible jerseys, you could split the team into white versus whatever dark color your team was. But as this was practice, we went shirts and skins. Since Mina was a girl, she was always shirts.

During a scrimmage, Mina was on my side. On offense, we ran a play where I set a screen, Mina handed the ball to the 2-guard, and then cut through the space created by my screen. Well, a boombox was playing Survivor's "Moment Of Truth," which got us jacked up. Mina in particular was a ball of energy. She did a joyful dance and kick, and accidentally kicked me in the ass!

When I got back home to San Francisco for the Fall' 84 semester, I was at my downstairs neighbor one Saturday morning. One of the neighborhood kids, 3rd-grade Curtis, came running down the hill. At the top of his lungs, he was swinging "The Moment Of Truth." When he got to us at the base of the hill, Curtis did an enthusiastic, Superman-like leap...

...and got all of 8" off the ground, LOL! But that, my friends, is what music is all about.

I'm at a party now (yes, we parents kick it on a school/work night), but earlier at the Alameda Trader Joe's, we heard Survivor's "The Moment Of Truth." Now, my own kids listen to, play, and like this song. But some maybe 9-year-old boy was diggin' it, and I guess it inspired him to pull some TJ's organic corn flakes off the shelf, and slam dunk it into his mom's cart. That, my friends, is what music is all about.

In a dig at radio stations, SAs, stereo stores, and audio shows, my wife KJ remarked about the inspirational "The Moment Of Truth": "So we gotta hear this at a Trader Joe's?!"
