Cables became a "component" after B&M stores realized that they needed an extra-high markup item to allow them to compete with the discounters ( Dixie Hi-Fi as an example) who were heavily cutting into their profit margins and threatening their existence.
I used to know a few B&M store audio salesmen who were put on the bosses "shit list" when they failed to sell high-profit cables with every component sale.
Alas, eventually this didn't rescue the B&M stores.
