Yesterday, originally performed by the Beatles, has been covered countless times. In my(not humble) opinion, all the renditions I have heard beyond the Beatles is an improvement over the original. Even most lounge singers do a better job.
The melody and lyrics are just beautiful. The sparseness of the original allows for a lot of embellishment in the way of arrangement. Vocalist with better chops give the song more body.
However, every time I hear the original, it makes me stop and say to myself who is doing that? Then it dawns on me that it is the Beatles. This is always a refreshing experience. Nevertheless, the covers exceed the original 80-90 percent of the time.
