I think a lot has to do with how the local terminal is managed. My experience with FedEx (in 4 different states and 5 cities) has varied from good to great. With UPS, it's been from bad to really bad.
I stop by the FedEx counter here in Charlotte, NC frequently to drop off packages that weren't ready in time for our daily pickup. On more than one occasion, a counter person has even come out to the car and help carry stuff in. Always polite, always professional, and always make it a point to express their appreciation for your business. Probably above the norm, but impressive just the same. I've had to drop stuff off at UPS too (charged to customer account), and even getting a "Hello" would be a surprise. Seems they all hate their job, and make it a point to be sure you know it.
