That's right. Most displacement hull sailboats will use the lead keel as the ground, but the system you describe is much better. One thing's for sure, if your boat gets struck by lightning, then the electricity WILL find it's way to ground. Even if it means blowing out the bottom of your hull!
On the West Coast you may not have to worry so much, but it North Florida it's the freaking lightning strike capital of the world.
FWIW, I'm going to put a boat system together for my catamaran this year. It will probably be a used JBL EON PA speaker with a 12" bass driver. Just one, so mono. I'll probably use a personal digital player like a Fiio, or Pono player. The amp I haven't decided on yet, but probably class D, or AB. The cool thing about the Pono player is it's hi res, and it uses SD cards, so you could have a huge hi res library with you on the water.
