The merger of the two black holes occurred 1.3 billion years ago. The ripple was detected by the two interferometers, one in Louisiana and the other in Washington, 7 msec apart. The interferometers detected a shift of 10^-19 meters or less than the diameter of a neutron in a tube that is about 2.5 mi long and the scientists have been at it for 10 years.
