I can't count the number of times I saw the band perform. There were at least 3 Earth, Wind, and Fire bands that performed with Maurice. The second iteration with Jessica Cleaves was my favorite of these bands. My all time favorite selection is I'd Rather Have You.
The band continued on with a carousel of members after Maurice stopped touring. The band's music just really hit hard. After the a Grammys were awarded to K.C. and the Sunshine Band and The Average White Band for best R&B over E,W, &F - I had no further use for the award. Later Kenny G getting an award for Jazz came as no surprise.
In the days of "Herbs and Spices" E, W, & F; Rare Earth,; Tower of Power; Mandrill; Ohio Players; Kool and the Gang; and War were the sounds of the early 70s. Van McCoy and the disco craze kind of smothered the mega-concerts where 5 and six bands performed before 50K plus crowds. E, W, & F was at the vanguard of the time.
Maurice White was an accomplished Jazz drummer before forming E, W, & F. He performed with Ramsey Lewis - once Ramsey went out as a solo act following the success of the Ramsey Lewis Trio's In Crowd. Maurice combined all sort of percussion instruments in his music: multiple drum kits; congas; and timbales playing concurrently. He exposed Americans to various African and Caribbean percussion instruments; all of this augmented by a precision wind ensemble, hard driving electric bass (played by his brother, Verdine White) and rhythm guitars, and a layer of vocals. A musical euphoria.
The lyrics of the link below is a most fitting tribute for Maurice's passing. Jessica's soaring solo seems to escort his spirit to the heavens. The words have much greater resonance with his passing.
Maurice will and has been missed. I will be listening on the wind for his songs.
