During the Fall '91 semester, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the grunge revolution shot heard 'round the world. Grunge wiped out all forms of popular music, except for rap.
Yet, when school got out in June 1992, grunge wasn't actually #1. People have forgotten or misunderstood that Metallica and Guns N' Roses were rock's #1 blockbusters.
GNR were known for taking Stones-like riffs, and adding vitriol and gutter punk. "November Rain" was part of GNR's Use Your Illusion I, which came out in - you guessed it - that grunge-infested September 1991. But the song itself did not come out until finals of Spring 1992. And when it did, its blend of Elton John and Queen took people by surprise.
I do not know about your particular locale, but here in the Bay Area, radio stations overplay "Welcome To The Jungle," "Sweet Child O' Mine," and "Paradise City." You need to look past those, dig down, and unearth the lesser-played material, such as "November Rain."
