RE: RMAF 2015

Pjay,

I appreciate your comments. I would like clarification on your paragraph about bad music. I have exhibited at audio shows, I have helped others at audio shows, and I have attended them as a consumer. Every year I hear the same comments about music, yet I do not hear people give examples of what they consider to be "good music". Herb Reichert, in his RMAF report commented that when he imported Audio Note he would play "real music" at trade shows. A dealer I worked with would brag about he always played "real music" at shows. What constitutes "real music" and why is the music played not "real music" and not to your liking?

When I demoed gear at trade shows I rarely played music that highlighted a specific attribute of the system, but music I enjoyed and listened to when I wanted to enjoy music. I found that my tastes appealed to some and not to others, especially Nguyen Le or the Naqoyqatsi soundtrack, or Amon Tobin (who I learned about from the Nordost guys). What most people wanted was light, easy on the ears, jazz. One year I got a request for classical. Not being familiar with the options on the server I put in a disc I knew, Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. The room emptied pretty quickly, very similar to opening night for actual musical piece, sadly.

Please, what would you recommend exhibitors play to keep the show goers satisfied that they are getting enjoyable music and hearing the system as a whole, including the best parts and the worst parts?
