I have used the Power Plant for over six years or more, I guess. Maybe because it has been so long, I don't see differences in sound quality these days. That is just fine with me. I wanted a device to protect all my gear. There is one thing you might try. I turned off the bright blue display using the far right button under the display. That may trim some of your power costs but I never noticed a rise in my electric bill like you state. Those blue lights are blinding after awhile.
