RE: RMAF thoughts.

I agree with your comments regarding the demographics of this year's RMAF. I was there as well. What I found equally alarming was that not only did the show exhibit its usual lack of attendee diversity, but that attendance overall seemed to be down. There were a few times on Sunday where the hallways seemed to be nearly devoid of visitors. There were also more empty rooms than I remember seeing in the seven other RMAF shows I've attended.

It caused me to wonder briefly why I attend these shows. I gave it some thought on the flight back to NYC and came up with this:

1 - New music. In all the shows I've attended I've never failed to come back with a list of music new to me that I intended to add to my library. In that respect this year's show was no different.

2 - These shows provide me the opportunity to talk face-to-face with equipment designers. One of the greatest joys for me is discussing with a designer why he (or she) made the decisions they did. That is especially interesting when you're in the same room with that piece of equipment. The passion and the knowledge some of these people bring to their craft and being able to participate, however briefly, in that thought process is worth the trip. The internet just can't do that.

3 - For me, these shows provide a sense of community. Sitting in a room with like-minded others and experiencing great music played back on a great system is fun and immensely enjoyable. It's not live music but it'll do just fine.

4 - Where and how else can I possibly hear so many different systems? The fact that I'll never own 99.9% of it doesn't matter.

I'm hoping that the decline I sensed in exhibitor and visitor attendance this year is not a pattern. I know, there are other shows but RMAF is something special. I hope it survives and prospers.
