if it's an iPhone, the bass rolls off SEVERELY below 200Hz or even higher. I've used a custom EQ with Audacity to try to 'fix' the sonics with some success. I don't know about other smartphones.
On the iPhone also, it's mono ... but yes, in a pinch it basically works. Maybe other phones have better/stereo recording, I don't know.
