Checkout these batteries if you want to save on weight. They are a fraction of the weight of common sealed lead acid batteries and have much longer idle shelf life. The downside is they cost quite a bit more and require a special charger.
Is this project of yours 'just for grins' for the fun of it, or are you trying to create a product?
I have one of the 24Ah batteries for portable HAM radio use. Saving weight in the backpack makes a huge difference.
