A cheap hard drive may die in 5 years. I have some very nice, expensive hard drives that have run flawlessly for over 10 years now. They are set up in a Raid 1 array in case one fails.
Backing up your data isn't all that big of a deal, there are local cloud storage devices available now that will do the job for you.
