I can understand why a person would upsample everything to the same sample rate and bit depth. Being able to pick a recording, any recording, and just play it or mix it with all the same settings makes life a little easier.
But don't think that the upsampled version sounds "better" because you upsampled it. Much more likely is that it might sound better (or worse) because you're playing it through different electronics.
A professional audio engineer might want to upsample a digital recording. It can be because they want/need to do some additional processing and want to minimize adverse effects from that processing.
