New servers...downtime

Over the past few months, I've been working on our plan to upgrade our servers and improve our bandwidth. Finally, I can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

In essence, we're moving everything to a new platform and replacing all of our servers with seven new ones. The overall investment in new hardware is over $10,000 and that's doing it as economically as possible. We'll also have redundant hardware, so the plan is to protect ourselves from significant downtime in the event of a failure by quickly switching over to a backup over to replace anything that fails.

Thus far, I've moved the Search app to one of the new servers nad added new slave replicators of the database. Search is now down using the a slave for queries, making it much more efficient. At least from here, it looks to be much faster though some complex searches can still take a little while. This change was actually made a few weeks ago and seems to have gone well with no one noticing the change...a good thing.

Next on the list will be to move the data server to one of the new servers. We'll be testing the change over procedure next week and if all goes well, make the move. When that happens, we will have to take the site down for a few minutes while we switch from the current master db server to the new one.

Finally, we'll move the main web server over which will take a bit more time for final syncing and tweaking before bringing up the new web server and completing the move.

Most of these changes will be largely unnoticed if things go well and a few may require us being down for a few minutes to worse case, a few hours.

Our target for completion is the first of the new year, so wish us well. And if you'd like to contribute to the cause, it is much appreciated.
