RE: New to Forum

Welcome! as well, and I too have a TD-145, great 'basic' TT I think. I use a Denon HOMC (DL-160) that sounds to me very good, balanced, etc..

Many years ago, I traded a Kenwood receiver for it with an ex-girlfriend. I mean, she had the TT and needed a receiver ...! Anyway, I think it was a decent deal.

Of course, you can 'go crazy' with carts and phono preamps, but IMO don't go too far unless you want to upgrade the TT as well. I don't know "how much cart" the Thorens can 'support' before it becomes the 'weakest link' but probably can spend a couple grand before getting there. OK, maybe a little less than that! but there's lots of good carts/stages to be had for reasonable money.

Definitely whatever phono stage you get (if it's tube) you can have a blast rolling in various tubes. I'm leaning back toward SS myself (hope to get a Parasound P7 preamp sometime soon) but still have 300B amps to satisfy my tube jones. I'm interested if the 'SS front end/preamp with tube power amps' philosophy will prove to be to my liking. Usually it's the 'other way around' with tube preamp and SS power amp.

There are those who espouse the "SS low-level signal amplification is best, then get tube goodness with the power amp" approach. Of course, there's "all tube" and "all SS" folks as well. I'm sloshing back and forth ...

Anyway, it's all a lifelong journey from lust into addiction, madness, periods of calm, then the cycle repeats ... ;D
