The wrong path?

How interesting.

For live recordings with little to no processing, including bootlegs of pop/rock music, what you describe as live, is what I normally hear - at home listening to these kinds of recordings or when I listen in a live venue.

But with studio recordings I hear something else. Not so much realism as "production". I rarely if ever hear this at a live event but I take the word of others that if I had good seat this is what it would sound like - I haven't had every seat in any venue so I can't disagree. That said many of these kinds of "produced" recordings can sound pretty awesome when seated between two speakers.

In my experience live recordings, including bootlegs, usually don't sound very good on lower quality audio equipment. Produced recordings can sound very good on even extremely modest audio equipment.

So when you talk "path" I think of the choices one makes in component selection or audio philosophy. The choices made by individual equipment designers are all over the place and comprise a wide diversity of philosophies. An audiophile philosophy as forwarded by any magazine or marketing vehicle is as much influenced by the manufacturers who advertise in the magazine as those same manufacturers are influenced by the philosophies forwarded by those same vehicles.

So when you talk about "We" and "path" I become lost because AFAIK there are many different paths and there is no "We" in spite of how much some would want us to believe. And FWIW I think we have spent way too much time and money trying to squeeze every last iota of "quality" from 2 channel (or mono). I can't help but believe the correct "path" would have been a format with far greater inherent potential.
