How about FX? Are the effects in Star Wars better than the miniaturization of 2001?
I'd argue, from a theoretical standpoint, that the added complexity of stereo MUST degrade the sound. I don't know what people talk about when they say there are no visual clues or depths to mono recordings: I certainly hear them. Why would one not?
